Introduction
The CENTRE FOR APPLIED MEDICAL RESEARCH (CIMA) carries out activities that support basic, and clinical research in the fields of health and biomedicine, to thus contribute to improving technology and innovation in research. Its research efforts in the field of biomedicine are expressed by agreements and collaborations with pharmaceutical companies and by the development of industrial property activities of technology applied to the business field.
At CIMA research activities are carried out in four priority areas: Oncology, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular Sciences as well as Gene Therapy and Hepatology.
The CIMA carries out biomedical research projects financed by public and private entities, which give rise to scientific publications and to the transfer of patent licences to the business field.
Total staff: 427
Personnel engaged in R&D: 379
Outstanding facilities and infrastructures related to R&D:
The CIMA has a built-on surface area of 15,030 m2, distributed over four research floors, ground floor and basement. The main building has 32 main laboratories, distributed as follows in agreement with the main research lines developed:
Oncology: 8 laboratories.
Neurosciences: 8 laboratories
Cardiovascular: 5 laboratories.
Gene therapy: 11 laboratories
It also has special laboratories of common use for each area: laboratories for cultures, monoclonal, clinical samples, radioactive marking, dark laboratory, etc.
In the southern area, each floor has laboratories with their respective offices. In the northern area there is a rest area, the secretaries office, a meeting room and library and the apparatus and culture rooms. In the main body there are some laboratory support rooms: cold chamber, ultrafreeze rooms, marking laboratory (for work with radioactivity) and a dark room for developing.
There is an assembly hall on the ground floor with capacity for one hundred and fifty people, an area for administration, management and general management of the centre, as well as spaces for the activities of the research support services and units. There is an animal house, a warehouse and other areas, such as the maintenance department, changing rooms, etc. in the basement.
With respect to the general facilities, the centre houses generating sets and uninterrupted power supply units for the more sensitive equipment. It also has water treatment units for research decalcified, osmotised-, and waste water. Moreover, it has a cryogenesis unit as well as chemical and biological waste collection and treatment areas.
Likewise, to guarantee the technical support to research there are some common research support units at the disposal of the four research areas mentioned: Proteomic Unit; Morphology and Image Unit, Biological Sample Bank, Animal House, Instrumental Techniques Unit
